Single page (8 x 10) beautifully penned letter inscribed along top (in the same hand): “Copy of M. Montifiore letter…London, 19 January, 1847.” This is a circa 1847 copy of that Montifiore letter, originally addressed to J. B. Kursheedt and Solomon Isaacs of New York (so inscribed at bottom) evidently made by one of those two men and then believed to have been sent to Isaac Leeser. Montifiore acknowledges receipt of their “…esteemed letter of 31 December last enclosing a bill of exchange for 64 pounds to be forwarded to the Poor of our brethren in the Holy Land. In compliance with your wish I immediately remitted the amount to the Leaders of the various Congregations, furnishing them with a copy of your directions about mode of distribution…” [and more about those directions adding]: “…I should have had much pleasure in aiding you…in your desire for similar information [about] disposal of the remittance to the Distribution committee in Amsterdam but I do not see any means by which your object could be satisfactorily attained [with reason for same].” Fancy, bold signature of Montifiore (obviously penned by one of the two New Yorkers). Some small smudges and stains; aging, but all easily readable. On the reverse the nine line penciled notations clearly appears to be in the hand of Isaac Leeser personally with instructions: “Note to the editor.” The writing is faint and hurried, but with study can be interpreted. A fascinating document
