Neatly penned one page letter entirely in his hand and fully signed by Gershom Kursheedt from New Orleans, Oct. 27, 5613 [1853]. He opens: “your [letter] came to hand. I do not deem it advisable or necessary for me to attempt a reply to such a sarcastic effusion.” Letter that follows is mostly about payment for various books of Leeser’s that were sold, including that to “Mr. Isaac Hart” prominent member of New Orleans Jewish congr. Kursheedt a noted publisher in New Orleans was handling Leeser’s publications and Occident for him. Asks Leeser to send bills for the Occident to director Hart and “…if you have a set of Prayer Books on hand Mr. Ezra Levy would like to buy them for his wife as hers were burnt in the late fire…Please send Mr. Touro a bill at same time.” Kursheedt was close associate of the famed Jewish philanthropist Judah Touro and was ultimately the executor of his estate; also very influential in Jewish and civic affairs in New Orleans.
