A scarce Judaica imprint actually written by distinguished Cabalist [Jewish Mystical Theological Movement] and British Consul at Jerusalem, this noted work was first published years earlier in Europe. In this “First American Edition” published by the author’s son whose name is the only one appearing on the title page and whose lithographic portrait is utilized for the Frontispiece!: “HISTORY OF THE CAPITAL OF ASIA AND THE TURKS: TOGETHER WITH AN ACCOUT OF THE DOMESTIC MANNERS OF THE TURKS IN TURKEY.” …Boston, Mass.: 5618 [1858] “REPRINTED FOR ISAAC EDREHI SON OF THE LATE BRITISH CONSUL AT JERUSALEM.” The facing portrait is (the son) Isaac and is captioned: “Son of the late British Consul” etc. Complete with volumes 1 and 2 of that set (with 1855 copyright date) total 295 pages. Plus, in the original same binding: “AN HISTORICAL ACCOUNT OF THE TEN TRIBES, SETTLED BEYOND THE RIVER SAMBATYON, IN THE EAST; WITH MANY OTHER CURIOUS MATTERS RELATING TO THE STATE OF THE ISRAELITES IN VARIOUS PARTS OF THE WORLD…TRANSLATED FROM ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT AND COMPILED BY REV. DR. M. [Moses] EDREHI, NATIVE OF MOROCCO.” Published London for the author… “Reprinted for His Son Isaac Edrehi, BOSTON, 5618 [1858].” 159 pages. 6 x 9. All gilt edge pages. Elegantly embossed, deep red morocco leather covers with fancy spine. Wear around edges of cover and chip off top of spine; very sound; exc. + inside. (Singerman No. 1527…refer also to Singerman No. 1277.) Most curious is the “NOTE TO THE READER” following the title page by Isaac Edrehi, describing his personal economic plight, his marriage and the machinations he underwent to get this very book in print!
