Single page neatly penned (in small, very readable hand) from “S. Newman” in Cincinnati, “February 5” (year not mentioned; circa early-mid 1850’s). “I have written this by the special request of the most respected, able members of the Charleston [S.C.] reformed synagogue with a view if possible to stop the so-called progress some of their members are bent on making which, it is clear, will ultimately lay Judaism prostrate. The promoters of this, who are also your sincere friends, trust that you will give this an insertion [not included] at your earliest opportunity, for their sakes as well as for the sake of upholding our religion…and that you will not spare your own able pen in support of the principles advocated herein. The Rev’d Mr. Nathan of N.Y. has kindly taken the trouble to copy it and has prepared this for the paper with my alteration and additions…you can do as you please. Wherever I [went] I found your prospectus in the hands of your friends who I am happy to inform you are very many [followed by two Hebrew words]. Am now on my return to New York in hope to [have the chance] to see you.” Condition fragile. Tattered on right margin with small piece bottom right blank margin only lacking and small chip on left margin; a few very minor, partial words. It’s 99% plus intact, although fragile.
