Acting as Leeser’s rep in that southern city Hart discusses mailings of the “Occident” and various books he is handling for Leeser, also sending news of the congregation Shanari-Chasset, of which he was a notable board member. Also mentions the annual Ball of their “Hebrew Benevolent Association” and sends Leeser a ticket; mentions that the prominent “M. Kursheedt has not paid me yet for that set of books. Contra to your orders I have sold another set for $20. I do this, Leeser, for the books really spoil in my hand.” Mentions other parties and books which he has been selling. “Here I am looked upon as one that will forward all news [to you]. I sent it to you exclusively [about] the election of the “Dispersed of Judah [the other Jewish congregation in N.O.] and when the last issue came out it did not appear, then I sent some money to the ‘Israelite’ and gave them a portion of the officers elected. …[Rabbi] Gutheim is about forming a choir preparatory to consecrating the new synagogue but it is yet far from being completed. He now resides in his house on one side of the synagogue and DeSilva on the other [side] in which the meeting rooms and school rooms are.” Single 9 x 11 sheet; boldly, neatly penned on both sides. The right edge ragged and chipped with most the margin lacking, but only end of a few words slightly affected. Few minor short edge tears elsewhere negligible
