LEON SOLIS-COHEN; he gained renown as a writer of forceful verse and was perhaps the first to render into English rhymes some of the legends of European Jewry, especially those touched with humor; authored numerous original stories based on rabbinical legends and on incidents in literature and folklore. Special memoriam booklet published on his death (late 1884 or early 1885) “LEON SOLIS-COHEN, Born Oct. 16, 1840 / Died Sept. 19, 1884.” Published by Cowen, Printer, NY 19 pages (6 x 8) includes three of his poems. Some light aging; exc. +. Two small chips on edge of blank margin on title page. Original gray paper covers brittle, front loose with numerous chips on edges. Reverse intact, chipped in few spots. (Singerman No. 3387.) Accompanied by three bio sketches; each of which makes mention of his Civil War service

He served in the Civil War with the Penna. “Keystone Battery” an artillery outfit, 1861-1863, until wounded just prior to the Battle of Gettysburg.
