Unusual single sheet printed broadside (6 ½ x 10 with very wide margins… blank reverse). Bold headline “PHILADELPHIA, MANETO !” Issued over the printed signature of the man who commissioned its printing: “ISAAC N. SOLIS” (member of prominent Phila. Jewish family; passed the Phila. bar as an attorney, 1880). Undated; circa 1890’s; at latest early 1900’s. It opens: “STAND FIRM, PHILADELPHIA! ...ENDURE FOREVER”; at great length praises his glorious memories of “…thy sacred places !” and expresses his love for that city; reminiscences of his earlier days including birth, courtship, marriage, parenthood and how he is tied to the heart of that city; he owes his knowledge to Phila. schools and: “…Can I forget Morais and the old Synagogue where he taught love of God, a freedom of country, of religion, of truth of mankind ? Not while these are dear to my heart.” Continuing that retrospection and reminiscence, he ends on a firm note (at length !) with “Stand firm, Philadelphia ! Stand, city of homes ! Stand the city of patriotism !” and even brings in the Liberty Bell, Patrick Henry, John Adams and John Hancock. This may have been issued for an oration he gave at a Jewish or civic function in the city. Unrecorded. Exc.
