Original penned two page letter entirely in his hand with full signature Sept. 20, 1894 to prominent American Jurist Mayer Sulzberger, congratulating him on his “…unanimous nomination as Judge of the Court of Common Pleas [first Jew ever appointed]…a matter of which you may be proud, but even this does not compensate for the sacrifice that you are making. However, your loss is the public gain; every citizen is required to assist in a promotion of the public weal, though it may cause a personal loss, and this doubtless is your motif. Another matter: candidates are taxed for party expenses; I do not think that a judicial candidate should pay such tax, and if it be imposed on you, refer the matter to me and think you will have the satisfaction of a unanimous nomination and a costless election.” Exc. fine example of the writing and thoughts of one of the great “movers and shakers” in American Judaism.
