English edition of the famous German-Jewish historian’s most significant work “History of the Jews.” Szold opens letter: “Professor George Adams Smith [Sir George Adam Smith was Scottish and famous scholar of the bible and geography of Palestine and professor of Hebrew and Old Testament studies at church college, Glasgow].arranged to see me this morning and the result of the conversation is [that] he will be thinking about the matter of our maps and, before he leaves Baltimore he will tell me what ones in his opinion are proper for the illustration of Graetz [the famous Heinrich Graetz, Jewish historian and bible scholar who authored ‘History of the Jews’] …Through his cartographer Mr. Bartholomew of Edinburgh he will furnish us with his map of the Semitic world and with two Palestinian maps…the extra Palestinian maps he will not undertake but thinks Mr. Bartholomew can be trusted to adapt them” and more about those maps and how to utilize them in the new edition…as well as business arrangements to be made and who is to be given credit for the maps “…when they are completed, which will not until the spring of 1897…Prof. Smith seems to know nothing of the probable cost of the maps [and mentioned other ‘reliable’ cartographer’s]…Prof. Smith may possibly accept an invitation of the Oriental Club to read a paper at his next meeting…” Exc.
