JOSEPH COWEN (1868-1932); three page neatly penned letter in his hand with full autograph signature on personal letterhead from London, August 5, 1904 (just one month following Herzl’s death) to Mayer Sulzberger. He opens: “One of the last things Herzl asked me to do, was to write you a letter on his behalf thanking you for your kind reception of me and your good thoughts and, in fact for all you said to me while in Philadelphia. I was to have come back to him the week he died, to have spent a few days with him and to have brought him the letter for your signature. He didn’t care to write English himself at any time, and he was not allowed by the doctors to write letters, otherwise you would have one from him direct. …Please know that the dead man knew a little of you, as much as I was allowed to know of you, and able to repeat and wanted to thank you…In my own name. I do so now…thanks.” Exc. +. Accompanied by two bio sketches of Cowen (he was a direct relative of Israel Zangwill who persuaded him to attend that First Zionist congress from which he devoted his life afterward to Herzl and their affairs)
