JULIUS ROSENWALD (1862-1932) famed merchant and Jewish philanthropist. Although mostly known in the U.S. for his humanitarianism and philanthropy to negro institutions (and little remembered today !) he also made major contributions to Jewish causes. Undated 4 page (8 ½ x 11) flyer of World War I (circa 1918) era is a printed copy of his handwritten letter to the noted Jewish scholar and communal leader Cyrus Adler. Double page centerfold with letterhead “Julius Rosenwald, Chicago” describes his urging upon Adler and Jewish Relief organizations the importance of people to respond to their appeal “…on behalf of the [Jewish] War and Pogrom sufferers in eastern Europe with a liberality that is demanded by the vastness of the tragedy itself,” writing at length about the importance of the program and saving the lives of those Jews who have been orphaned and otherwise living in destitution…especially those in the Ukraine. He interposes a Yiddish word in this personal appeal mentioning, “…these people are not ‘schnorrers,’ before the war they were as self-reliant as we are. Through no fault of their own they find themselves helpless. The Jews of America alone have the means and must carry out the responsibility…” The cover page is mostly blank, bearing only a small portrait of Rosenwald in the lower corner and bold script at top corner “Read What Julius Rosenwald of Chicago has to say.” The back sheet, too, is mostly blank with bold print in lower corner: “American Jewish Relief Appeal…Phila…in conjunction with special emergency fund of the federation of Jewish charities.” Light aging. Exc. Accompanied with lengthy detailed bio sketch of Rosenwald and his important charitable and communal activities
