Autograph Letter Signed “Jonas Bigelow”, 7 pages with address panel, quarto, August 26, 1833, Fort Smith, Arkansas to Otis Arnold, Troy, New York. The letter reads in part: “...I concluded to purchase a small lot of goods and go up the Arkansas river and trade for fur and Bear skins whilst I was making purchases...offered my goods and marked 100 per cent on them and commenced selling . in ten days we had taken 600 dollars besides beaver and bear skins...my plan was this to go up the Arkansas river about 200 miles above this place and get our Cedar Rafts...I had three large rafts that would have sold in New Orleans at 1200 dollars each...we had nothing but venison and bear meat for a long time and began to want bread...I was pretty well reduced in flesh and purse...I am now engaged in public contracts of the U.S. for furnishing the emigrating Indians and am nearly thro...I used frequently to go bear hunting and Buffalo Hunting but have quit it lately want of time it is fine sport to hunt Buffalo you frequently see 3 or 4000 in a gangin the vast Prairies...thousands are killed just for their tongues which is reconed a great dainty by Epicures...”.
