1838-39, Seminole War Documents, Washington, D.C., Choice Very Fine. This lot contains two unbound books that contain five printed Seminole War documents between the two of them. One volume measures 8.4" x 5.75", and the other measures 8.75" x 5.5". The volumes have been disbound, and therefore contain no covers. Includes: A transcript of a letter written to General Jesup by J.R. Poinsett, Secretary of War. It is 2 pages long, and has been dated March 22, 1838. Heavy foxing. The content of the transcript deals with "the present stage of our relations with the Indians residing within the States and Territories east of the Mississippi". ...plus; A transcript of letters and lists that deal with "Indian Depradations". Dated January 29, 1838, and runs 69 pages. Light toning and foxing throughout. A few of the transcripted letters were written by Martin Van Buren, J.R. Poinsett, C.A. Harris, and L.T. Pease, just to name a few. The lists include "claims coming within the provisions of the act of Congress of April 9, 1816". ...plus; A collection of transcribed and printed letters written by Hezekiah L. Thistle, dealing with the "subject of expelling the hostile Indians from Florida". The title of the collection is called, "Memorial of Hezekiah L. Thistle", is dated January 18, 1839, and contains 8 pages with some light toning. ...plus; A transcription of a letter written by Secretary of War, J.R. Poinsett, and titled, "Appropriation-Seminole War". It has been dated September 18, 1837, and contains 2 pages that are heavily toned with a large tear on the upper margin, not affecting any text. The subject of the letter deals with the Seminole Indians who have "failed to comply with their engagements" for the second time, leaving the War Department no other altnerative "other than the enforcement of the treaty". ...plus; A collection of transcriptions that deal with Indian Affairs. Among the transcriptions are a report from the Commissioner of Indian Affiars, and copies of a contract made between General Jesup, certain Creek Chiefs, and J.C. Watson & Co. The collection has been dated March 23, 1838, and contains 173 pages, with foxing throughout, as well as light toning. A great collection with very stimulating content.
