SILLIMAN, Benjamin (1779-1864) - Yale educator and scientist. Autograph manuscript signed, “B. Silliman”, 1p., 4.5” x 7.5” on folded quarto stationery, December 12, 1860, New Haven. It reads in part, “General La Fayette in the year 1824 commenced his triumphant tour through this country at New York and in his progress East, passed a day in New Haven. I called upon him at the Hotel…My little son* then 8 years old was embraced and kissed by the Genl as the grandson of his revolutionary friend Govr Trumbull the second. The General with his son George Washington and his secretary Mons. Le Vasseur, then resorted to my house & rested two hours. I had two other interviews with Genl La Fayette one in Boston & another in New York. Pleasant reminiscences.” [Silliman adds a note regarding his son in the margin, “*Now professor of Chemistry in Yale College.”] Legible ink. Folds and two areas of mounting traces on verso. VG.
