ALS, Newman, Georgia, January3, 1860, and reads in part: “ …a portion of the Democratic Party appeared at the courthouse today …A call was made for a convention of the Democratic Party of this State to assemble at Milledgeville for the purpose of appointing delegates to the National Convention, to be held at Charleston on April next…so short a notice was given of the call of the convention it would have been almost impossible for a considerable portion of the counties in the state to have been represented …A respectable portion of the Democratic members of the legislature protested against the right and propriety of the members of the legislature to call such a Convention…we recommend a meeting of the Democratic Party …to be held in Newnan for the purpose of appointing delegates to the Milledgeville Convention in March …we do not feel bound by the action of the late convention held in Milledgeville, composed mostly of members of the legislature whose appointment…was irregular and without the authority and sanction of the party…their resignation would tend to the harmony and interest of the Democratic party in this state…Ink blotches appear where the writers wished to amend some of the wording of the resolution. For example, in the phrase:” Constitutional rights of the slave- owning states is changed to Constitutional rights of the South. Other than these intentional corrections, this document is in very good condition.
