TOMPKINS, Daniel (1774 - 1825) New York Politician, Governor of that state from 1807 to 1817, he was Vice President of the United States from 1817 to 1825. Fine 1p. 4to. ALS. as Governor of New York, Albany, March 11, 1809, To Robert Brent Esquire of the: "Oswego Attachment" concerning payment of the State Militia, in part:" The remittance of 2500 dollars on account of the Oswego Detachment has been duly received. I regret that you should have so much trouble in this business, but the hurry with which the detachments went into service & the want of information in the Officers as to the proper mode of taking vouchers to comply with the regulations of the War Department has produced it…" Here Governor Tompkins is almost certainly referring to the hurried raising of state militia units to be sent to New Orleans in order to counter a perceived threat of a British invasion there. Tensions between Britain and the United States had been escalating steadily since the passage of the Embargo Acts of 1807, and though the worst provisions of this act would be modified just four days after this letter was written, the many remaining areas of disagreement between the two nations would eventually lead to the War of 1812. Except for two tiny holes roughly the size of a pencil lead along the letter's folds, it is in near fine condition.
