JACKSON, ANDREW (1767-1845). 7th U.S. President, General during the War of 1812, victor of the Battle of New Orleans in 1812. Address Leaf Free Franked "Free Andrew Jackson" by him as President across the top, addressed in another hand to Mrs. Emma Y. Donelson at a boarding house in Philadelphia; [February 1837]. With a circular red "WASHINGTON CITY D.C. FEB. 18" and red stamped "FREE." Still attached is the original letter, of which the free frank is on the verso of the integral leaf. The 2-1/4 p. quarto letter is signed "Sarah;" no doubt Jackson's daughter-in-law Sarah Yorke Jackson, who served for a time as White House hostess. She addresses Emma, who had recently lost a young son, as "Sister" expressing love and concern. The Donelson relatives of Andrew Jackson's wife, Rachel were numerous. Jackson's signature and the rest of the writing are dark and bold. Some light staining affects the address portion of the leaf, far from Jackson's signature. Some taping of the folds. A most unusual Jackson free frank as President with the original letter of a family member still present.
