Autograph Letter Signed, “J. M. Bell” 2p. folio Huntington, Pennsylvania, October 21, 1836, and reads in part: “...what do you think about the approaching Presidential Election. I felt little or no interest in this last general election, but I confess I do wish & earnestly desire that Harrison should get the vote of Pennsa. and I do beleived he will if the people will only turn out...I do not wish to see Pennsa. fall into the clutches of the Albany Regency, of which Van Buren is the leader, the leading principle of policy of which, I believe, is to corrupt, bribe & rule by favoritism & dividing out the spoils. Instead of dividing the surplus revenue & thereby hindering the Genl. Governemnt from having too great & prepondering & indeed corrupting influence among the states, Van Buren is opposed to its distribution & wishes to retain it to divide out among his favorites by particular plans & thereby perpetuate for a greater length of time his influence & power & rule...” Fine.
