Having served with him in Congress a personal acquaintance & knowledge of his character & capacity justify us in saying he would make an admirable officer...” signed by thirty-two members of congress, including JOHN H. REAGAN (1818-1905)Postmaster General of the Confederate States; THOMAS M. FERRELL (1844-1916); AYLETT HAWES BUCKNER (1816-1894); CHARLES CRISP (1845-1896) who entered the Confederate Army in May 1861; commissioned lieutenant in Company K, Tenth Regiment, Virginia Infantry, and served with that regiment until May 12, 1864, when he became a prisoner of war; ETHELBERT BARKSDALE (1824-1893) ; member of the Confederate Congress 1861-1865; JAMES H. BLOUNT (1837-1903); JOHN J. O’NEILL (1846-1898); BARCLAY HENLEY (1843-1914); SEABORN REESE (1846-1907); GEORGE W. CASSIDY (1836-1892); EDWARD T. LEWIS (1834-1927) enlisted as a private in an Infantry regiment of the Confederate Army and served throughout the Civil War, attaining the rank of captain of Cavalry; member of the State house of representatives in 1865; JOHN S. BARBOUR Jr. (1820-1892)president of the Orange & Alexandria Railroad Co. 1852-1881; JOHN R. GLASCOCK (1845-1913); WILLIAM C. OATES (1835-1910) during the Civil War entered the Confederate Army as captain of Company G, Fifteenth Regiment, Alabama Infantry, in July 1861; appointed colonel in the Provisional Army of the Confederacy May 1, 1863; JOHN E. HALSELL (1826-1899); JAMES H. JONES (1830-1904) during the Civil War enlisted in the Confederate Army and served as captain, lieutenant colonel, and colonel of the Eleventh Texas Infantry; LUKE PRYOR (1820-1900); GOLDSMITH W. HEWITT (1834-1895) entered the Confederate Army in June 1861 as a private in Company B, Tenth Regiment, Alabama Infantry; was promoted to captain of Company G, Twenty-eighth Regiment, Alabama Infantry, in 1862; WILLIAM S. ROSECRANS (1819-1898) during the Civil War reentered the service on June 7, 1861, as colonel of the Twenty-third Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry; commissioned brigadier general, United States Army, May 16, 1861; major general, United States Volunteers, March 21, 1862; resigned from the United States Army March 28, 1867; CARLETON HUNT (1836-1921) .; member of the convention of the Constitutional Union Party which met in Baton Rouge, La., in 1860; appointed in April 1861 first lieutenant in the Louisiana Regiment of Artillery, Confederate Army; and CHARLES P.
