Autograph Letter Signed, “M.B. White” 2p. quarto, Tapsham, February 4, 1849, and reads in part: “...I reached home...after being at your house in Lowell, found the people in usual health. They were somewhat surprised to see me in these diggins, perhaps quite as much so, as they would be to see me start for California in the course of a few months; and by the way how does your California fever come on...the more I reflect upon the enterprise the more I am determined to cast in my lot among the adventurers; I think that I would not meet with quite as much opposition from my friends as I anticipated. I would like to have you ascertain as near as possible, what the opportunities are at present for joing companies to go...It is an old addage that there is no speculation without risk and no doubt there would be some risk connected with going to C. but I can conceive of no other way that a man is so likely in a short time, to procure the necessary means of support for life, as going to the land of gold...” VG.
