Autograph Letter Signed, “J C Brown” 2p. quarto, San Francisco, April 10, 1851, with integral leaf addressed to “Pardon Brown” in Middletown, Rhode Island, with “San Francisco” postmark, it reads in part: “...I had a pleasant time to York that night I went on. The next day I took the Ohio for Shagrees we left the mail at Savannah, Charleston and Havanna at this place we stopped 4 days, we had 53 passengers...went to Panama by land...I was 6 days on the Isthmus. I took the Antalope...stopped at Alcapulco in Mexico...and landed in San Francisco...I left for Sacremento after trying my best to get employ and when I arrived and found things as dull at this place as at the former I started for the mines...I then went to digging the precious metal...There is a great deal of suffering in the mines at present and I cam very near being one of them...” More.
