Carte de Visite of Freed Slave, 2.5" x 4". This scarce and fascinating CDV identifies a former slave freed by Union Colonel William J. Palmer of the 15th Pennsylvania Cavalry Regiment. The slave was subsequently employed by the regiment. Penned in ink on the reverse: "'Pick” our boy whom Col. P. abducted. Phila, March 1864." After being "abducted," Pick served the cavalry regiment as a farrier. The few CDVs that feature slaves or former slaves rarely identify their subjects. Penciled notations on the reverse suggest that the boy worked with "Saddler Geo. H. Kline." Throughout the latter part of the Civil War, the 15th Regiment served in Tennessee in the Department of the Cumberland, where they came across Pick. Backstamped by photographer Morgan & Brusstar of Philadelphia. Minor spotting and soiling.
