A great war-date manuscript patriotic Confederate speech, 2 1/4pp. 4to., in the hand of Capt. Charles B. Tebbs, in which, Capt. Tebbs gives thanks and praise to the "Ladies of Leesburg" for the presentation of their flag to his company of men known as the Loudoun Guard. Tebbs raised this company, which served in the Virginia militia in 1859, but following the fall of Fort Sumter they were enrolled into Confederate States service on April 22 at Leesburg, Virginia. They were quartered at Tennesson's Restaurant on Cameron Street. Ultimately, they became Company C of the 17th Virginia Infantry fighting with the Army of Northern Virginia in all her major battles. The company consisted of sixty-six men when mustered into service in 1861, but by Appomattox they mustered only four men. Addressed to a certain "Mr. Harrison" Tebbs' speech reads, in part: "The 'Loudoun Guard' accept with…gratitude the beautiful flag…of the Ladies of Leesburg…we accept it with all the responsibilities attaching to the possession of such a gift…it is the flag of our country; the emblem of our glorious Confederacy of states…it is the gift of a sex, whom it is our privilege, our pride and our delightful duty to love, to honor and to protect, who, in the darkest hour of our struggle for Independence…cheered the hearts, inspired the souls, and strengthened the arm of the heroes of the Revolution. It is the gift of woman…we accept this flag and promise to bear it wherever our country's honor points onto the way…we will not dishonor it…will honor, cherish and defend it…". Unsigned from the personal papers of Tebbs' with a photocopy of a letter by Tebbs with his signature upon it. Minor soiling, else VG
