Confederate Stonewall Brigade letter, 2pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. John W. Middleton (1835-1907), Co. H, 27th Virginia Infantry, (WIA & POW Pickett's Charge, Gettysburg 7/3/63), "Camp Buckhanan," Apr. 1, 1862, in part: "…nothing new has occurred for several days. We were relieved from [Turner] Ashby's command yesterday and returned to camp…everything seems dark and gloomy. Our army whipped, routed and disorganized…the enemy [who was] laying in sight of us with a large army that could drive us before them whenever they choose…I hope we have accomplished something by the battle [of Winchester], but I cannot see any good but a great deal of harm. The men seem discouraged…most of the men think [Stonewall] Jackson was out generaled and whipped. I am going home as soon as my term expires…I wish it was today for I am getting tired of this life always liable to be attacked. Our tents have…been sent to Harrisonburg…I have seen a list of the prisoners taken. They are in Baltimore. Our loss is a great deal more than stated…it is between 5 and 600. Our men have always said the Yankees would not fight, but…they will. I used to think they were a set of cowards, but [I] find that I was mistaken...J. W. Middleton…".
