A strong Union soldier’s letter signed by “Lansing”, Camp near Falmouth, VA., May 12, 1863, 4pp, VG. In small part “... the death of George Whipple. He was mortally wounded Monday Morning. General berry was killed Sunday, Since the battle, Gen. Lee sent over to Gen. Hooker to take care of his own wounded as they could not take care of them for they lacked ambulances ... an official dispatch was read to us that the death of Stonewall Jackson was announced in Richmiod papers. We had heard before that he was seriously wounded but this is the first we had heard of his demise ...Gen. Graham of the 1st Division of the 3rd corps will take command ... We all esteemed Gen. Whipple very much. Hooker is the favorite of the majority of the army...” Neatly penned, minor stain upper left.
