Confederate Stonewall Brigade letter, 1p. 8vo., written by Pvt. John W. Middleton (1835-1907), Co. H, 27th Virginia Infantry, (WIA & POW Pickett's Charge, Gettysburg 7/3/63), Winchester, June 16, 1863, in part: "…we have been marching ever since we left Culpeper. We have had quite a time here. We surrounded the Yankees on Saturday night and then demanded their surrender but they refused. On Sunday there was heavy cannonading and that night they tried to slip out but our division was sent round and we headed them on the pike at Stephenson's. We captured about 3,000 prisoners and a lot of horses, wagons…I must close as we have orders to move. I am well…J. W. Middleton…". The original transmittal cover is included. Both overall VG
