A good war-date Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Henry H. Fulton, Co. E, 20th Ohio Vols. [shot by Rebel guerrillas near Pine Level, N. C.,4/10/65; DOW Raleigh, 4/12/65], Holly Springs, [Miss.], Nov. 30, 1862, in part: "…we left LaGrange last Friday and arrived here today…we are now encamped on ground that was occupied by the rebels…they are now 14 miles south of this. We have heard heavy cannonading all day and I can now hear a continued roar of artillery…the fighting was between Gen. Sherman & Price [corps commander under Earl Van Doren] . Sherman passed through here two days ago from Memphis. There is now the largest army here that has ever been together in the south west…Holly Springs is 25 miles south of LaGrange and about 59 from Bolivar. It is the county seat…and a very nice place. The boys say that it is the finest town they have seen in the south, It is built on the same plan as Newark. We entered town with the bands playing Yankee Doodle and then Dixie. We are camped in the edge of town…there is a hospital within 20 rods of our Reg with 60 wounded Rebels in it that were not able to be moved. They were wounded at Corinth…marching…we have such a load to carry. We have our knapsacks…besides our gun and cartridge boxes & canteens…we also carry our tents …I helped Oldaker take up his son…let me know how he got home with him…we are in the third division commanded by Gen. John A. Logan and in the 2d brigade commanded by Col. Leggett. The whole army is under Grant…direct to Holly Springs, Miss…Henry." Soon troops under Confederate General Earl Van Doren would outmaneuver Grant from Holly Springs. The original stamped transmittal cover is included. VG
