Union soldier's war-date letter, 2pp. folio, written by Pvt. Montgomery Hickman, Co. I, 97th Illinois Vols., Lexington, KY, Oct. 30, 1862, to his wife, in part: "…we stayed at Cynthiana until last Sunday morning (this regiment always travels on Sunday)…of, Lordy ! what a march. It snowed all of Saturday night and the worst of it I was on guard that night…the snow was at least six or eight inches deep…our brigade…soon had the roads in a perfect loblolly of slop which made the marching anything but pleasant. We traveled 18 mies…to Paris (a very pretty town full of good Union people) where we stayed one day…I have come over some of the finest country and through some of the nicest towns that last few days…Lexington is a perfect Paradise [and] so is the country around it…many have become sick and been left on the way. One poor fellow Sam'l. Kehr, of our company, died in a wagon this morning just as we entered Lexington and I hear that james Mitchell and Brit Robinson, who were left in the hospital at Covington, are both dead. It is now two weeks since we started on this march. I have walked every step of the way and carried my luggage all the time…M. Hickman." The original transmittal cover is included. VG
