War-date Union soldier's letter, 5pp. 8vo., written by 1st Sgt. John E. Cram, Co. B, 11th New Hampshire Vols. [later lieutenant; severely WIA Spotsylvania C. H., Va., 5/12/64], "near Lancaster, KY, May 14, 1863", in part: "…I am glad the ambrotype got home…it was not a very good one for my hair was long and the fellow that took it was not very good at the business. Sometimes he would get a good picture and oftener he would not. Fast day…we were reviewed by Genl. Sturgis…we went about two miles (with the rest of the Regts in our brigade and one battery of four guns) down through the village of Winchester and after we passed in review the Genl. took us through the village and back to camp…the news we receive now from Genl. Hooker's Army is not very encouraging..your dutiful son. John E. Cram." The original transmittal cover is included. VG
