War-date Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Cyrus W. Liggett, Co. H, 31st Ohio Vols., Triune, Tenn., June 22, 1863, to William Newton Fulton, in part: "…I have enjoyed good health (except the loss of my voice)…the boys in the regiment never were in better health or finer spirits…the boys hardly realize that there is was were it not for the exciting news in the paper…as to the whereabouts of the Potomac army but we have confidence enough in Hooker…that he will drive the rebel army back across the Rappahannock. The opinion of the soldiers…is that our three years will not see this rebellion crushed. We would like to return home, but not until the war is over. The fighting has just commenced. The south will resist us until the last moment. We are in for using any means to conquer them. If the nigers will be of any service to us I am in for using them. If the south had carried on this war honorable we would have been of a different opinion…now it is anything to whip [them] They have done everything that was in their power to defeat us. They have armed the Indians and sent them into the field to fight them on their own ground and if there is any advantage we must take it. The negroes caused this war and in my opinion they will end it. We are dealing with a treacherous people and we must deal treacherously with them. I have talked with several men that belonged to the Southern army. They say that hopes are in the north. They think that the north will help them…Davis tells them in his Proclamation that the north will welcome them across the Ohio river. He maybe right but I think that he is somewhat mistaken although I believe that there is men in Homer that would willingly fight for the rebel cause…there is more copperheads there then Union men…give us your opinion of the war…write soon…Cyrus Liggett.".
