Union soldier's war-date letter, 3pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Montgomery Hickman, Co. I, 97th Illinois Vols., "Rear of Vicksburg, June 24, 1863", to his wife, in part: "…we are still besieging the rebs…slowly advancing on their works. I hope it will not be many days or…weeks before we get possession of the place. We are having a pretty hard time of it. It is so…hot. I suppose you have heard of the death of Mart. Dowdy. He was shot through the head while on picket but lived two days. It happened on the 12th. Poor fellow. He made a good soldier and his may be the fate of many of us before we get Vicksburg. Tom Rice (who had just got up to the regiment) was badly wounded the other day and will probably die. We have cheering news from Port Hudson…that place has been taken (so they say). I hope it is true. It is said Johnson is coming up in our rear with a large army and a part of our army has gone back to Black river to meet him. Our regiment has been under marching orders ever since yesterday morning to go there but have not yet got off…M. Hickman." The original stamped transmittal cover is included. VG
