War-date Union soldier’s Autograph Letter Signed by Martin Van Buren Phelps, 3pp. octavo, Convalescent Camp, November 23, 1863, and reads in part: “...One of our Regt came to my quarters & said you wanted me to send your letters to you....We have a new commander in this camp his name is [General John J.] Abercrombie, aint that a splendid name. I expect we will have to stand around. There was a Grand Review here last Wednesday, which quite a number of ladies was present & that still just suited me. I dressed up in my best & went out as a spectator. We was paid Saturday & the boys was most awful drunk. I never witnessed such a time before in all my life & dont wish to again. They kept us sober boys awake most all night. Baker is here yet, was examined since you left & sent back to the barracks...” Fine condition. The 141st Pennsylvania regiment reached the field of Gettysburg on the evening of July 1, after a most fatiguing march. On the next day it went into position at the angle of Sickles' line, on the right of the Peach Orchard, which was the most exposed part of the whole field. Its action was most heroic throughout the day, during which it sustained fearful losses. It went into action on that morning with 198 men, and lost during the battle 136 in killed, wounded and missing, or nearly 70 per cent of its numbers. Its total loss during the two days was 149.
