War-date Union soldier's letter (with soldier art of military motif on verso), 3pp. 8vo., written by Elias French, Co. E, 119th Penn. Vols. (WIA Spotsylvania C. H., Va., 5/12/64), Camp near Brandy Station, [Va.], Feb. 22, 1864 to his mother, in part: "…I came in from picket…the rebels are starving. They are living on a pint of flower a day…thay have no coffee and no sugar as we have…when I get paid off I will send some money..to you as quick as I can…we are going to have a big fight here on [in] May. The rebels are busy…throwing up breast works…frost and rifle pits across the Rapidan river and [were] we had a big battle before…tell Uncle Charley I send my best respects. I got drink [drunk] and kicked the coffee over and spilt it all over. Direct your letter to Mr. Elias French 119 P. V. V., 3 Brigade, 1 Division, 6 Army Corps, Company E. [2nd Lt.] John [S.} Hick is a friend of yours. He is adjutant of the 2nd Mounted [N. Y.] rifles. He sends his best respects to you." Minor soiling, else VG
