Written by Isaac D. Landis, 9th Pennsylvania Calvary (92nd Volunteers) to his parents, 3pp., Camp 9th Penna Cavy, near Louisville, Ky. August 6, 1864. Landis served with the 9th Penn. Calvary from October 1861 until July 1865, and was wounded in Georgia in November 1864. Excellent content letter, reads in part: "….I was sorry to hear the Rebels behaved so badly in Chambersburg but I expect the people wont blow so much about their being more lenient on the people than our own troops. If it were not for individual parties suffering I would not feel at all sorry but it is rather hard to be burned out of house and home. Well we are again under marching orders. We are to proceed to Nashville as soon as possible when I suppose we will proceed to the front where we are all anxious to get to, as we have just as much duty to do here as in the front and yet get no credit for what we do. I've had two men killed since coming to this city. One man of Co. H was killed by the kick of a horse. He was kicked just above the right temple and his skull fractured so that his brains oozed out. He lived for 8 hours afterwards, altogether unconscious. One mas was shot a few days ago by Guerillas while carrying dispatch between a scouting party and the city, about 5 miles from the latter place….I have a servant and pay him $10 a month. He is the best nigger I ever saw. He is honest cleanly & quiet and is I believe very much attached to me as he cannot do too much for me. In the morning when I wake up there is my boots blacked, a basin of water and towel ready for me, and the quarters all swept around the tent. My saber always has a fine polish. As soon as I get up my bed is taken up shook and aired and put away until evening when it is again made down. My horses of which I have two are well fed and curried as clean as can be. When I change clothes the dirty ones are taken to a wash woman and returned in good style packed away in my trunk. In everything he excels all the niggers in the regiment. I am only afraid he will be taken away from me and put into the service. But if we get to Tennessee again I bet I will keep him….". Landis continues with family matters, and ends with "Enclosed I send 2 more photographs for my selection which I wish you to preserve".
