Letter written by Isaac D. Landis of the 9th Pennsylvania Calvary, 1pp., Camp 9th Penna Calvary, Dunlap Sequatchie Valley, Tenn., September 3, 1864, to his parents. The letter, written three days before fighting in Readyville, Tenn., reads: "I now hasten to pencil you a few lines to relieve you of anxiety on our accounting. We left Chattanooga, Tenn on Tuesday for a scout after Wheeler who is making another Extensive raid. We crossed Walloons Ridge yesterday and must cross rthe Cumberland today on our way to McMinnville and are about sending our transportation back to Chattanooga all excepting 3 or 4 wagons. I do not think we will meet with Wheeler as he has to much the start of us. We picked up one man, a straggler. I will write you as soon as possible. Gideon is well"....Gideon being is brother. In late 1864, Wheeler's cavalry did not accompany Hood on his Franklin–Nashville Campaign back into Tennessee and was virtually the only effective Confederate force to oppose Sherman's March to the Sea to Savannah.
