A good war-date Union soldier's letter, 3pp. 4to., written by Pvt. Henry H. (now "Peter") Fulton, Co. E, 20th Ohio Vols. [shot by Rebel guerrillas near Pine Level, N. C., 4/10/65; DOW Raleigh, 4/12/65], Goldsboro, N. C., March 4, 1865, in part: "…I am well and have been on the last campaign…I am still with the ordnance train and consider myself very fortunate for while the men in the regiment march and carry their loads I have mine hauled and ride myself when I wish. We are going to start again next Monday…we will go first to Pine Level, but Richmond will be the ultimate point unless the Rebs evacuate. The next campaign will doubtless be a bloody one…our long marches without fighting heavy battles is over…they must either fight or have their capitol cut off from the rest of the Confederacy…Ed Freeman was mustered 1st Lieut. a few days ago. Jim [Benjamin] Nerland is here and well. He lost the things you sent with him in Tenn…you need not send me anything more as I have enough…clouting to last me as long as I stay in the army. It will only be a little more than four months, but I hope the war will close before that time. I want to go home but hate to leave the army as long as the war lasts. Tom Leggett is well and hearty. He wants to get a furlough to go home to see Orve [Orville] Scott. He swears he will shoot him if he ever sees him…Orve will be apt to leave Homer before Tom gets back…I would shoot him if I was in his place. Tom is worth all the Scotts. Ell is the only good one in the pack…Peter." As in the proceeding letter, Fulton now signs his 1865 letters "Peter." The original stamped transmittal cover is included. Near fine
