War-date Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. George S. Youngs, [POW Harper's Ferry, Va., 9/15/62], Co. G, 126th New York Vols., "Provost Guard Hd. Qrs., Second Corps near Burkesville Junction, Va., Apr. 25, 1865", in part: "…a salute of thirteen guns was fired here at daylight…and one gun is to be fired at an interval of every half hour until sunset by order of Gen. Grant…the remains of President Lincoln are to be consigned to the tomb today. I supposed this morning when I was awakened by the salute, that official news had been received of the surrender of Johnston's army and was quite disappointed when informed of the real cause….Geo. S. Young, Provost Guard, Hd. Qrs. Second Corps, Army of the Potomac…". The original stamped transmittal cover is included. VG
