Battlefield Orders, Federal Circular No. 5, issued by General Vodges and signed by his Aide-de-Camp Headquarters, District of Florida, Dept of the South, Jacksonville, Florida, May 8, 1865, 1pp. In large part, “It is officially announced to the troops in this District that an agreement has been entered into between General W.T. Sherman commanding U.S. forces and General Joseph E. Johnston, commanding C.S. forces in N.C., for the surrender of the all the C.S. troops in the States of South Carolina, Georgia, and Florida. The commanders of Posts in this District will therefore conform to the provisions of Special Field Orders No. 65, C.S. from Headquarters Military Division of the Mississippi, and cease all hostilities and foraging until further orders.”
