A poignant war-date Union company commander's letter informing Attorney Rufus Billing Cowing that his brother had not been seen since the battle of Chickamauga. Here his commander gives hope that the missing man is no doubt a prisoner and is yet alive, but records list Kirkland as being killed in battle. The letter is, 1p. 4to., written by 2nd Lt. William R. Goodnough, Co. A, 6th Ohio, "Camp 6th Ohio, Chattanooga, Tenn., Oct. 1, 1863, reading, in part: "This days mail brings a letter from you for your brother Corporal K. N. Cowing…I am sorry to inform you that he has been missing since the action of Saturday Sept. 19th and is no doubt in the hands of the Rebels, that he was not killed. We are sure as the same ground was fought over on Sunday and he would have been found if so and is undoubtedly a prisoner.A lot of Rebel Cavalry charged the line as soon as it was broken and he was last seen before that…W.
