A good war-date Union surgeon's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Asst. Surgeon William C. Towle 23rd Maine Vols., Edwards Ferry, MD, Apr. 7, 1863, to his wife, in part: "…the Co. which came up not having time to pitch their own tents were taken into others tents. I took young Gibbs from Brighton…he is a corporal in Co. B was drafted & would not hire a substitute…he thinks of taking home a 'Negro girl'…to work in his family. I favored the idea and told him I thought I would take one too. What do you think of that? We can find plenty of them when we go to Washington…write to dr. Perley or someone else that we are acquainted with to pick us out some…they will do better than any help which we can get at home. Perhaps Otis would like one too for it wont cost anything to get them on. Ask Otis about it and you can be thinking it over. It will be help that can be relied on & then they know their place which I think is a great consideration[?]…there is [here] one store, tow or three dwelling houses and a government storehouse. We can see but little of Virginia from this point…it is all that is visible of the 'sacred soil'. They had a little skirmish at Drainsville a few days ago. The Rebel Mosby and part of the 1st Vermont Cavalry…there was no decisive result. It was but a short distance from here…we had a meeting last sabbath…we had singing in which I heartily joined. It seemed good…W. C. Towle." The original transmittal cover is included. VG.
