War-date Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Daniel D. Barrows, Co. E, 9th Maine Vols., [later Signal Corps], Fortress Monroe, Oct. 27, 1861, in part: "…we are laying at Fortress Monroe board the steamer Goatsacoalcos. A fleet of 150 steamers with 75,000 men…bound on a secret expedition and shall be likely to see some hard fighting…it is a damned shame to shove this green regiment into the business scaling forts but we have got to stand it…they want to butcher us. All we have ben left about half starved and what we have had to eat you would not give to a hog. Our officers are d-d scoundrels and [Lt.] John Andrews among the rest…he don't think anymore of the Saco boys than he would a drove of hogs. His office fetched him sudden but never mind. All we are praying for is to go into action and that will show which are the best men. You sent your love to him but he will never know it unless he gets it from some other source…they may write and praise this regiment…but I tell you we have been used worse than so many cattle…I want you to make it public…I am writing the feeling of the whole regiment…Daniel D. Barrows, Sherman's Division, 3d Brigade, 9th Maine Regt Vols., Co. E…". VG The original transmittal cover is included.
