War-date Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written, on Gen. Dix patriotic stationery, by Pvt. Daniel D. Barrows, Co. E, 9th Maine Vols., [later Signal Corps], Fortress Monroe, Oct. 27, 1861, in part: "…our expedition are expecting to sail every minute, vessels all steamed up ready for the signal…some think it is Charleston and others New Orleans …we shall have to fight for every inch of ground…the region around the fort is beautiful. We can see from the ship the rebels camp…very often their cavalry on the beach drilling. They are on the opposite shore from the fort. Last Sunday the rebels tired their batteries from Sewell's Point but fell short. Tell Mrs. Lewis I was along side of the Minnesota but did not get aboard on account of the officers being in a hurry but had a glimpse of Melvin through the port hole but no chance to speak to him…over 1200 men have been aboard this ship 9 days hived up here like so many cattle. There are about 50 in the hospital and dying off every day. While I am writing the word is passed that another poor fellow has just breathed his last. Our Butcher is trying to see what kind of stuff we are made of but as yet he has not fetched any of the Saco boys. We have lost about 18 men out of the regiment since we left…we have not had twenty four hours drill since we left…it is rather tough to stick us into this business quite so soon…I am bound to have one hack at them before we get through…I am now writing in a bunk 18 inches high laying on my belly writing on a knapsack…D. D. Barrows. Direct Daniel D. Barrows, Sherman's Division, 3rd Brigade, 9th Maine Regt, Co. E, care of D. D. Thompkins, Ast. Q. M. Gen'l…enclosed I send you a part of a fleece that the old barber bled me of…D. D. B." Light soiling, else VG
