War-date Union soldier's letter, 3 1/3pp. 8vo., written, on Ben Franklin patriotic stationery, by Pvt. Daniel D. Barrows, Co. E, 9th Maine Vols., [later Signal Corps], Fort Walker, Camp Campbell, Hilton Head, S. C., Dec. 19, 1861, in part: "…we have just got through moving over into the rear of our new entrenchments and shall be likely to stop here until the war is over…unless we are called upon to go down to Savannah…we have in our brigade now six regiments containing about 7 thousand men and there is in the division about 30 thousand enough to knock hell out of all the rebels in the south. Our living is mighty poor…we get used by our officers like d-d dogs and if it ever should be my luck to get north some of them will wish they had never been born. Our captain [Edwin W. Wedgewood] is a regular d-d rascal and our other officers not much better. Our Orderly [Sgt. Levi F.] McKenney is the only man we have got in the crowd…D. D. Barrows". VG
