War-date Union soldier's letter, 1p. 4to., written by Pvt. Daniel D. Barrows, Co. E, 9th Maine Vols., [later Signal Corps], Warsaw Island, Ga., Feb. 12. 1862, in part: "…we left Hilton Head the 5th…ran ground detaining us 12 hours. This is the most god forsaken place we have ever been in. We are in sight of Fort Pulaski and three heavy batteries at the mouth of the Wilmington river. Can see the rebel gun boats flying up and down the Savannah river. It is thought that our coming here is a farce to draw guns and troops from Charleston and Savannah…the rebels are pretty well prepared for us as we have given them all the chances they have wanted…this war is a d-d piece of speculation and some of the head ones don't care how long it lasts…we are right in the heart of rebeldom and what our next move will be we cant tell…D. D. Barrows". VG
