War-date Union soldier's letter, 3pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Daniel D. Barrows, Co. E, 9th Maine Vols., [later Signal Corps], Hilton Head, S. C., Dec. 13, 1863", to his mother, in part: "…I thought you had forgotten me…I little thought on the morning I left home that I was looking upon Mary for the last time…god know what another year may make. I will remember the words you spoke to me before leaving, that three years might cause great changes…I have seen a great many hard sights but nothing so sad as Mary's death. I am still at work on the condenser…they are still at work on Charleston which will…surly be ours. There are but very few troops on the Island at present not more than two full Regts and two at Beaufort everything that can be spared is at Morris Island…I have been waiting to see Capt. Beard post sutler at Morris Island and doing a large business…he is one of the finest men on the Island and if I can get…a chance with him it will be a nice place and good pay…Daniel D. Barrows". VG
