War-date Union soldier's letter, 1p. 4to., written by Pvt. Daniel D. Barrows, Co. E, 9th Maine Vols., Signal U. S. A., Morris Island, S. C., Mar. 9, 1864, in part: "…I commenced this sheet by giving you an original song [sold in the following lot] composed by an artillerist at Fort Gregg; now called Putnam…it's very good for a soldier. Our forces in Florida met with bad success at first but will no doubt come out all right…our batteries are still peppering Charleston, one gun having thrown 3750…shell into the city. It must be rather a ticklish place to stop in. The Rebs served us rather a sealy trick a short time ago. They came down in a submarine boat and blew up the gun boat Housatonic, the finest wood boat on the blockade. She lays in about four fathoms of water. She was guarding the north channel. If the rebs had troops to spare they could trouble us some as there is not more than fourteen hundred men on Morris Island and hardly as many on Folly. The troops are all in Florida, but…old Beau has got all he can attend to down that way…let me know how the 9th was received. I have heard that they did not receive our escort and that some of the officers got roughly used in N. Y…Daniel D. Barrows". Minor spotting, else VG
