War-date Union soldier's letter, 3pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Daniel D. Barrows, Signal Corps, [formerly 9th Maine Vols.], Signal Corps U. S. A., Morris Island, S. C., Aug. 14, 1864, in part: "…[we are] removed from Folly to Morris Island again…I hope it is the last move we shall make…unless it is to move into Charleston…we had a great deal of tramping to do where we could not use the horses. I come very near losing my horse…crossing from Folly to Morris. In getting him on board the flat boat the gang board slipt which threw him down about six feet cutting his tongue nearly in two and injuring him otherwise badly but I guess he will get over it…it seems natural to get back on old Morris…in sight of all the batteries as well as the city. We smashed up a blockade runner [the Prince Albert] a few mornings since [that] was attempting to get into Charleston. Such vessels don't stand much of a chance about here…[On August 9th, the Prince Albert ran aground and was destroyed by the monitor U. S. S. Catskill.]…there has been some tremendous fighting about Petersburg…it is hard telling what Foster will do down here. He is cramped for want of troops…will probably keep to work with what few he has got which is not more than from 15 to 20,000, a small force to handle so large a territory…Daniel D. Barrows". VG
