War-date Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Daniel D. Barrows, Signal Corps, [formerly 9th Maine Vols.], "Head Quarters Signal Detachment, Morris Island, S. C., Nov. 6, 1864", in part: "Having just purchased a couple of pictures [by Henry P. Moore]…of a portion of Hilton Head I thought the might be of some interest…the dock in the large picture is one fourth of a mile and two rods in length with a T. three hundred feet in length. The large steam ship at the end of the dock represents the Arago, the ferry boat…Oneata of Philadelphia. The building with two dots on the roof is the condenser where I worked nearly a year. The shanty at the shore end on the left is the dock guard house. The other buildings are store houses and offices. There is a horse rail road runs from the end of the dock to all the principle houses above the Head. Just opposite the two story corner building marked with four dots is the chief quartermaster's and signal building which you will see in the small picture with the signal flag at the top. The building on the right in the small picture are ordinance that on the left with the stairs at the end is the bakery. The large two story building on the left in front is now used as a commissary, formerly a hospital. It was in that building I stopped a week with a bayonet wound in the leg. That and the signal building were the only two buildings on the north side of the Island when we landed three years ago. Now there is quite a city. There are some eight of these pictures to make the view complete which I shall send…as I…get them. The picture of the dock and shipping is perfect. The steamer in the stream with two smoke stacks is the Peconic, formerly in the signal service. The two at the left are the Neptune and Delaware. The large ship in the background is the steam Frigate Wabash lying near Bay Point Helena Island. The steamer at the right of the Arago is the Tradewind owned in the past by Capt. Tuck Morrill and commanded by Capt. Babbige…Daniel D. Barrows". Four copies of war-date images taken by New Hampshire photographer Henry P. Moore of Hilton Head are included. VG. (Four photocopies of Moore's Hilton Head photos are included).
