War-date Union soldier's letter, 3pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Daniel D. Barrows, Signal Corps, [formerly 9th Maine Vols.], "Head Quarters Signal Detachment, Morris Island, S. C., Dec. 4, 1864", in part: "…the island is nearly destitute of troops. They are away on an expedition so that pie business [sutler sales] is down for the present…we have just bought a stove costing us 50 dollars…Sherman is close on to Savannah. Our expedition attacked the Charleston and Savannah railroad [to] take possession of Pocotagilo and burning the RR bridge. Their loss was about 1,000 killed, wounded and missing. They will probably try to form a junction with Sherman…we shall see lively tie down here this winter…Daniel D. Barrows". VG
