Union soldier’s letter written by “Theod(ore W. Hodges) who enlisted on 10/31/1861 into "C" Co. IL 55th Infantry and was killed in action on 4/6/1862 at Shiloh, TN. the seven page letter is datelined 55th Ills. Vol, March 27/62, just 5 weeks before he KIA and this being his last letter home. In part, “The General ordered me with 30 men to go with him to Reconnoiter. We got close enough to see the fort plainly. ... We climbed the hill into the fort… and planted the stars and stripes. ... Did not see a Butternut, as the boys call the Secesh, as they all wear butternut colored clothes. The boys all soon began to feel well and sang ‘I wish I was in Dixie. ... Our advance guard was fired into by Rebel Cavalry. ... “
